This Heroes Day, we’re proud to celebrate our very own Mr Arthur Garande, the lead at Purumutso, who was recently featured in the 2025 ZBIN Heroes Special. His story is one of grit, vision, and refusing to let obstacles stand in the way of a dream.
“Arthur didn’t start with a big farm, unlimited capital, or even the “perfect” conditions. He began with a piece of rural land in Shamva and a burning desire to grow papayas. When resources were scarce, he improvised — even collecting empty plastics in Harare’s CBD to help set up his first nursery.
The naysayers doubted him: “Papayas? Who’s going to buy those?” But Arthur pressed on, guided by a belief that small steps could lead to big harvests.
Today, that perseverance has paid off. Arthur has grown into Zimbabwe’s leading voice in papaya farming, inspiring thousands of other farmers to take their own first steps. Under his leadership, Purumutso continues to expand, supporting growers, opening up new markets, and proving that with determination, innovation, and community spirit, anything is possible.
Arthur’s journey is a reminder of what Heroes Day is all about — honouring those who inspire, uplift, and create a path for others to follow.”
Congratulations, Arthur! Your Purumutso family and farming community celebrate you. You can view the ZBIN Heroes Special here.
